This Morning Was Extremely Quiet

This morning was extremely quiet… You could hear the birds chirping happily outside… No traffic…  Peaceful…  Hmm…   …a deceiving calm…  Our country of Bolivia is in turmoil right now… and today most of the country decided to go on “strike” as a measure of resistance against what is happening.   …so today there is no traffic… no business…  everyone stays at home… “peace”!!!

A “nice” day for me…  A day to sleep in a little bit… relax a little bit… get caught up on lots of little things… …a “nice” day…

But what about the people who live from day to day????  …depending on what they sell each day to feed their children…  What are they going to eat today???  For them, today isn’t a “nice” day… it’s a day where their stomach is in knots… not only from hunger but from the worry of how they are going to make ends meet…

Change In Direction

To explain the following letter… I started it back in mid- September… planning to get it written before the city’s international fair (September 21 – 30)…  I knew if I didn’t get it finish it before, who knows when I’d get around to it… Well… here we are… almost in the middle of November!!!  …I better get it written before we get too busy with “Christmas on the Streets”!!!

We’ve had some really special times over the last couple months… filled with some major activities – participating in the international fair, our 7th anniversary, the end of our classes at El Jordán and graduation, and our exposition (where people come in and buy directly from our students). We’ve also had lots of visitors… Ben and Dorcas Sawatzky, Paul and Gillian Robinson, Arnold and Mary Ann Hicks, Uncle Norman and Nancy, Mike and Leann Dingman and Sandy and Susy Bell!!!  Thanks to each one of you for coming… sharing with us… and encouraging us!!!

Anyhow… this is what I stared writing almost 2 months ago…  Sorry!

When Is Your Birthday?

Well… I’m really bad with birthdays… I have a hard time, not remembering, but actually doing something, for birthdays of even the people closest to me…   However… birthdays have been on my mind a lot lately… I’ve come to realize, once again, how important birthdays are to many others – especially to our kids…

Just the other day it was Mery’s birthday (August 6th).  Weeks ahead of time, Mery reminded me countless times about her birthday…  Disappointment flashed across her face when I told her I probably wouldn’t make it out to her little “place” on her birthday  (some of you have been out to visit her before – you might never have seen a poorer place, but at the same time, you’ve probably rarely met up with such simple sincerity in a hostess or heard such joyful laughter in the kids…).  When she came to class the day after her birthday, a special cake was waiting for her – to share with her teacher and the other students… Mery who usually more shyly stands by the sidelines in class and activities, got to be the center of attention… It was her day…  I don’t think it was just the shower that she took at El Jordán that made her face shine as she left our place that day…
